Support Programs at Pine Island
Flexible Reading Interventions -
Each grade level has designated a block of time to provide support for students who need extra attention to learn foundational reading skills. Students may be grouped into small groups, according to their needs. Classroom teachers provide direct, explicit lessons to help students progress. These groups are very flexible - new groups are formed every 3-4 weeks, based on the latest information for each student (At school, we generally refer to these groups as "flex groups" since they change on a regular basis). During this time, teachers may also determine it is beneficial to work as a whole class on skills that the majority of the class has demonstrated a need for extra review or relearning. A few of the research-based programs and materials that are used for these intervention blocks include 95 Percent Group phonics, Spiral Up phonics, Building Fluency kits, Comprehension Toolkit, Making Words/Making Big Words, and Thinking Maps.
Pull-out Groups -
The Title I and Title III staff work with small groups of students throughout the day, to provide support in reading and math. This small-group support might be anywhere from 15 minutes to 1/2 hour in length. Groups may meet from two to five days per week. In some instances, larger groups of students may work on computer-based programs in one of the computer labs or in a classroom. A variety of research-based programs and materials are used with these students, including (math) Xtra Math, Moby Math, Lakeshore Common Core Math kits, Numeracy Consultant resources; Math Solutions resources; (literacy) Read Naturally, 95 Percent Group phonics and comprehension materials, Soar to Success program, Florida Center for Reading Research activities. Students may work with a variety of materials ranging from hands-on activities and learning games to books and magazines, as well as iPads and computers.
